On 26 and 27 March 2024, SWISS UMEF, in collaboration with several partners, organised an international conference titled "21st Century Sovereignty and Future Scenarios". This event brought together experts in geopolitics, economics, and cybersecurity to explore the evolution of the concept of sovereignty from the Treaty of Westphalia to the present day.
Discussions focused on current geopolitical challenges, the issues of digital sovereignty, and the threats faced by small states from external influences. Recent conflicts, notably in Ukraine and Gaza, were analysed to understand how they challenge the concept of sovereignty in international law.
This conference provided a platform for exchanging diverse perspectives, with particular attention to the vulnerability of small countries such as Moldova or even Switzerland in the current global context. Participants had the opportunity to discuss future scenarios for state sovereignty, considering technological developments and international dynamics.
SWISS UMEF is proud to have organised this event, which contributed to enriching the debate on such a crucial topic as sovereignty in the modern era.
